Julie Carlisle
ARTIST
Julie's elementary school teacher wrote in her report card that Julie has a natural painting ability - she never stops painting . . . and she never did stop. Julie started acquiring painting and graphic design commissions in high school and then went on to formal training in Toronto, Ontario. She attended George Brown College for Graphic Design and graduated from Sheridan College of Applied Arts and Technology for Illustration. Since graduating Julie has been employed as a Graphic Designer, Prepress Technician, Illustrator and Muralist. Julie belongs to several art organizations and shows her art in juried exhibitions.
Artist Statement
I believe that the painting grows from the canvas in layers and that each brushstroke on top of each other is directing the emergence of form on the canvas. No line or stroke of paint shall be erased or be in the wrong place. All will vibrate together until the final painting is revealed.
My style of Landscape Painting tends to bring about a different viewpoint, of course many of them have the horizon line with the sky and the earth, but others are searching for the beauty of landscape in a different perspective. By incorporating a birds-eye view the painting takes on a closer angle. Sometimes eliminating the horizon line altogether brings a light airiness to a painting. Focusing on certain elements in the landscape can evoke a different feeling from looking at it.
Alternatively, my Art Nouveau paintings are a researched and more structured series of design. Each canvas is meticulously crafted with a story attached to each painting. My background in Illustration and admiration for birds and folklore have combined here. Many of the canvases in this series pay tribute to the incredible decorative artists of the era.
"Rainy Reflections"
So happy that my painting of a motorcycle rolling down the Gardiner Expressway in the rain received an "Honourable Mention Award" at the COAA's show Crossection in September 2023
